Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Why egg is the better Ragnar Lodbrok

Attention!: This column contains spoilers to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and the Vikings series.

The parallels between egg from Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Ragnar Lodbrok from the television series "Vikings" are hard to overlook. In particular, the male egg previews visually a hazardous similarity to the TV main character.

Her similarities: Both have a stinging, dramatic and sometimes challenging look and both is said to look "model" to show an "authentic Viking" or a "viking" in egg - whatever That should mean. Hair color, hairstyle, beard, body size, stature and tattoos of both northern men are almost identical, if you leave a male image on the default settings. Especially similar are facial expressions and gestures in numerous situations.

But not only external overlaps fall. Both egg and ragnar are descendants / reincarnations / Günstlinge Odins and occasionally accompanied by a rabens. The background story, from the rise of the simple farmer to the ruler, are similar.

Disputes among siblings

Ragnar's relationship with his brother blind to call tense, would probably be understated. The Berserker always seems to stand in Ragnars shadows and suffer from it. Similarly, it behaves with egg and pull brother Sigurd, because the latter says permanently, the sister portion wanted to give him the rank.

Both main characters are basically similar to bridal use, except that a secret does not make a healthy relationship with Sigurd. Ragnar, on the other hand, tries his feelings to hide the roller blind, probably also made of false pride. Thanks to Ragnar, Rollo even escapes an execution, but Ragnar betrays nobody from the clan that he has brought the man to read the will of the gods to save rollo.

IF I HAD A HEART I COULD LOVE YOU

Over four seasons of Vikings, Ragnar Lodbrok proved that he can not love anyone but himself. Even the supposed love for his sons is based on the desire to persist their own legacy in the form of genome, which equals an entitlement same.

, however, loves, sincere . This meant not only optional, romantic involvements, but also the love of the raven clan. Every single member is seen, belonging and taken seriously.

Egg is looking for full bonds to others who require reciprocity and understanding and no pulse-driven and calculated such as ragnar, which always has to benefit from his counterpart in any form. People who bring the ragnar nothing more, as Lagerttha or at some point also aslaug, are simply replaced. When he regrets something, then for his sake and not because he has added other pain. If a loves egg, then with all the trim and turn, even if this is vulnerable.

Give me a Nordic setting, epic battles and as far as possible Vikings inside and I am happy. Then I do not care if the story is transported via a video game, a TV series or a novel. In terms of egg, I find that ubisoft, whether you want to admit it or not, have just stolen the right features of Ragnar: charisma, connection to Odin and look. On many of the other character features Ragnar I can do without anyway, although I have liked to see Vikings up to Ragnar's death.

Learning readiness is the key

"Never look back. That's not the way you will go." Ragar once said to his eldest son Björn and seems to live even under this premise. But what is problematic about it? Why is it important to keep a look at the past?

On the one hand, the past binds us emotionally to persons, things and experiences that can form our character.

On the other hand, we should learn from the past. However, this only works if we also notice us. So if you think about the future, it is damned to repeat mistakes from the past over and always. Exactly this problem accompanies Ragnar from Vikings to his tallouring death, which he could have escaped with a little more learning. Who ignores his past runs the risk of stagnating in the present.

Both in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla as well as in Vikings, there are persons in the villages, the egg and ragnar advice spiritually. The different understanding of past and future will also be clear in the talks with these: someone does not want to hear about the great destiny, the senerer Valka recognizes. Ragnar, on the other hand, is looking for the sener with a literally demanding way to hear again and again eagerly, which the gods carrying the gods predicted for him. He even mutates to an Egomanic cholerist here, which even accuses the visual and the gods, if he did not commit the prophecies.

All coincidence?

Hardly: One of the composers from Vikings was also entrusted with the music for Valhalla. This was a deliberate decision that can not be denied. The music has no insignificant influence on the mood in the game that is similar to Vikings. Everything revolves around the protagonist or the protagonist, as it's about Ragnar and his "flair" in the series. In the interview with Games magazine VG247, Assistant Level Design Director Laurence Laurence is considered the question of possible inspiration from Vikings, she said:

"Well, we have inspired a lot of television broadcasts and films. The Viking era is a super cool era. We performed many research we had on paper, and we also had a historian who at the conception of the game accompanied. "

Even if egg and ragnar should not be one and the same person, it is not possible to point out that the creative heads behind ACV have watched a powerful portion of Ragnar Lodbrok and Vikings for the game.

Already almost to emphasize that Ragnar and egg specifically embody different persons, Ragnar is always addressed in the game. Almost all his sons swish in the world distributed around and are important quests and part of the main history of the game. In addition, you can go around with Ragnar's Drengirn and visit his grave.

I'm glad for my part that Ubisoft did not just look at everything from Vikings. For example, that egg can be female is an important point here. In addition, there is no destructive and fixed on itself, as Ragnar Lodbrok is or abuses others for personal purposes. There is a multi-layered, loving and social character and alone therefore I prefer him / her as a ragnaver.

What I still like in egg, I have ever described in my personal ranking with all main characters from AC. Valhalla would be just half as good when there was no egg, just as the series Vikings with Ragnar's death has lost all its charm.
